Video Export Sizes for Every Platform: TikTok, Reels, Shorts, X, LinkedIn and Pinterest
A plain-English guide to the right video size and aspect ratio for TikTok, Instagram Reels and Feed, YouTube and Shorts, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Snapchat and Pinterest.
You can make a great video and still have it look wrong after you post it. Black bars at the top and bottom, a face cut off at the edge, captions hidden behind the app buttons — these problems almost always come from exporting at the wrong size. Every platform crops and displays video a little differently, so the size you export at matters as much as the edit itself.
Aspect Ratio vs. Resolution
Two numbers describe a video frame. The aspect ratio is the shape: 9:16 is tall, 16:9 is wide, 1:1 is square and 4:5 is a slightly tall rectangle. The resolution is how many pixels fill that shape, such as 1080×1920. Getting the shape right is the most important part. If the shape does not match the platform, the app will add bars or crop your picture, no matter how sharp it is.
The Sizes We Use for Each Platform
These are the export presets built into the VibeEdit Pro export window. They follow the shapes each platform is designed to show full-screen or in the feed:
- TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and Snapchat Spotlight: 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920.
- Instagram Feed and Facebook Feed: 4:5 portrait at 1080×1350. It takes up more of the screen than a square post.
- Instagram square posts and LinkedIn: 1:1 at 1080×1080.
- YouTube (regular videos): 16:9 at 1920×1080.
- X (Twitter): 16:9 at 1280×720, which keeps files small and uploads fast.
- Pinterest: 2:3 at 1000×1500, the tall pin shape that stands out in the grid.
What Happens When Your Footage Is a Different Shape
Most people film everything vertically on a phone, then want to post to a platform that prefers a different shape. A good exporter should never stretch your video to fit, because stretching makes people look wide or thin. Instead it should scale the video down until it fits and fill the leftover space with a plain background. That is how VibeEdit Pro handles it: your picture keeps its true proportions every time.
If you want the video to fill the whole frame with no bars, it is better to film or reframe for that shape from the start. For example, if you know a clip is going to Instagram Feed, keep the important action in the middle of the frame so a 4:5 version still looks natural.
Keep Text Away From the Edges
On vertical apps, the bottom of the screen is covered by the caption, the username and the music label, and the right side is covered by the like, comment and share buttons. Place captions and on-screen text a little above the bottom and away from the right edge. A middle or lower-third position is usually the safest choice for 9:16 videos.
Frame Rate, Format and File Size
For social platforms, 30 frames per second in the MP4 format works almost everywhere and gives a good balance between smoothness and file size. Higher bitrates look a little cleaner but make bigger files, which can take longer to upload on a phone connection. Unless you are posting fast action or gaming footage, 30 fps MP4 is a safe default.
A Quick Checklist Before You Export
- Pick the platform first, then pick the preset that matches it.
- Check that faces and key action stay inside the frame after the shape changes.
- Move captions away from the bottom and right edges on vertical videos.
- Use MP4 at 30 fps unless you have a specific reason not to.
- Export a separate version for each platform instead of reusing one file everywhere.
Exporting the right size takes a few seconds and makes your video look like it was made for the platform it is on. That small detail is one of the easiest ways to look more professional.
